THE QUILT

My Grandmother was a talented quilter, and often crafted quilts to mark the milestones of her children and grandchildren. You recieved a quilt upon birth, and again at your High School graduation. When she passed my Grandfather took over the tradition, ensuring no grandchild would be without their quilt. While this piece is directly inspired by artist Piet Mondrian, the work that went into it was wholly inspired by them.

Mondrian was an easy choice for inspiration, as my home is decorated with the primary colors. The grid in his paintings provided an simple translation to a quilt pattern. I have sewing experience, but this was my first time sewing a quilt and designing the pattern. The quilt is king-sized, and the entire thing was sewn on my domestic singer sewing machine. The work was completed over 3 months.

Thank you to the Art Institute of Chicago for allowing me to photograph my piece with original Mondrian works.
