SPERRY GLACIER TABLE

Assignment: Design a piece of furniture that tells a story.

THE TABLE

This table is based on the receding of Sperry Glacier located in Glacier National Park, Montana. With this project I wanted to showcase the effects of global warming over a certain period of time – I feel that visual and set examples of climate change can be a more convincing argument. Glaciers are one of the most tangible examples of global warming with years of evidence and documentation. 

THE GLACIER

In order to determine the shape of my shelves I used USGS Sperry Glacier photographs from the years 1966, 1998, and 2015. I digitally traced the glacier borders, then CNC cut them into slabs of walnut. Aside from this reflection, the height between shelves is scaled to the gap in time; 1.5” is equal to one year.
