A SPACE FOR GATHERING

Assignment: Analyze a site in Downtown Champaign, design a building fit for the space and community needs.

THE SITE

In my site analysis, I created two different maps, with objectives to understand light distribution and use patterns. Using self observed data, I created a light sensitivity map dependet on spatial location and height, estimating the amount of light each building recieves. Next I mapped urban systems, including bike paths, bus stops, and green spaces. 

THE SPACE

My ultimate reccomendation was a mixed use gallery space. The design maximizes natural light within a dense setting by strategizing sun exposure. The property benefits from unobstructed southern light, however the main facade falls on the north side. With extensive glazing on the north and south facades, I believe I exceeded the expected light exposure of the site. To minimize shadowing and preserve light penetration, the upper floors recede in a stepped hierarchy. This approach enhances daylight access while creating functional balcony spaces and a dynamic sense of growth.
